Tattoos are all the rage these days. I have enjoyed viewing some of them on other people, but they are just not for me. I can understand tattoos on Maori warriors, New Guinea tribespeople, aborigines, even scarification if it makes you part of yoor people. But "something 'tribal'"... oh please What tribe do you belong to, Ralph?
Body art is fine, but choose it well. Make it something that really means something to you. I don't get these people with symbols from other cultures on the back of their necks.
If I ever deigned to get a tat, it would be one of my mantras, creeds, words to live by, like... "momento mori" or "Whatever. It's all good."
One of my cousins has an Inuit whale on the small of her back. She always wanted to be a trainer at Sea World. She says if she can't ride a whale a whale is gonna ride her. OK.
And I worked with a woman... I asked her just out of the blue one day, "Got any tattoos?" She was happy to pull down her pants and lift her blouse for everyone to see an enormous woman in a green dress down her back. Didn't get to see much because the boss came by just then and said "Sasha! Pull up your pants!" Damn!
I loved a woman with roses adorning a breast. I honored them as things with meaning to her. It made no difference to me. I envied the ink for being in her skin.
My problem is that tattoos are popular. Honey, fashions change. They aren't as easy to discard as a yellow LIVESTRONG bracelet. And if you think "I can always have it removed" then why get it in the first place?
I would be happy to hear from you on this. Got any tattoos?

Consider red henna. Lovely and it wears off. Looked great on Gabrielle and Xena.
No tattoos myself. There's only two things I've ever seriously considered getting tattoed on me: the Miami Dolphins logo and my spouse's name (should I ever have one), both as signs of dedication and loyalty to them. Probably will never go through with the Dolphins one since the loyalty can't be returned; we'll see on the spouse thing if I ever get one (don't hold your breath).
One of my associates has a dragon tattoo on his arm (and plans to eventually get one for the other arm and each leg).
Another associate has a tribal design about halfway around his arm (he claims he'll finish it the rest of the way around and possibly expand it up his shoulder but he claims alot of things).
Another associate has the Chaos symbol tattooed on his calf.
Yet another guy I know got the Flogging Molly shamrock tattooed on his calf (don't quite know why as I don't think he's that big of a fan of them, though he is a redhead so maybe he liked it cause he's got Irish blood in his veins).
Used to know a guy named James who got "James: to be different" tattooed in I think Mandarin Chinese on his calf.
Used to know another guy who has a couple tats, but I don't recall what of; he claims ink addiction is real but then again he's smoked, drank, and done various drugs so he's probably easily addicted.
I know a girl from college who is quasi-obsessed with Tinkerbell but despite 2 tattoos and probably more to come (i think it was star and something tribal) but refuses to get Tinkerbell tattooed on her (she felt despite her lifelong Tink-megafandom she didnt want it on her).
The last library courier (Robert, not Smokestacks) had his wife's name tattooed on his leg in Chinese.
And I agree tribals are rather silly for white folk.
